I founded BUILT TO LEAD in 2002, following 20 years as a Sales leader with CompuServe in Upper Arlington, Ohio. There, I led the sales and business development teams responsible for driving the CompuServe Network Services revenue from $50 million to $1.2 billion between 1990 and 2000. The cool thing was that all that growth was completely organic.
While doing all that, I managed to squeeze in building and leading CompuServe’s Leadership Development program, which became the basis for BUILT TO LEAD’s framework of leadership principles, The Essentials of Excellence.

Know what? This question lacks an answer. That is why I founded BUILT TO LEAD, which exists to help our families, friends, and clients frame their unique answers to this question; to guide them as they set a course toward a more hopeful future on their own personal “Builder’s Journey;” and to encourage them along the way as they seek the answer for themselves.
Starting out, I intended BUILT TO LEAD to be a sole practice for myself—my life’s Opus, or masterwork—after I left CompuServe/Worldcom in 2002. I designed BUILT TO LEAD specifically NOT to “scale” for growth but to serve a few select clients with excellence; NOT to “maximize profits” but to maximize learning; NOT to appeal to those seeking a “quick fix” but for those interested in transforming performance from mediocre to great.
Along the way, BUILT TO LEAD became a band of some of my former clients, called to a shared vision of bringing clarity to those that want to build something exceptional. Neither I nor any of the other five Builders ever expects to retire from our Opus.
I'm living my dream with my bride of 28 years, Missi. We've got four great kids, three of whom have left the nest. Unless I'm out on my bike, you can find us in Powell, Ohio savoring our last one, Taylor.
