“Brother” Jim…

For most of my adult life, I’ve been called “Brother.” It’s a word that carries profound meaning for me. It is DEEPLY rooted in the bonds forged with the men I fought alongside. Those words – – – “I love you, brother…”…“Let’s roll, brother…”…“Strength and Honor, brother…” – – – still echo deep in my soul. Even now, as I reflect on them, they stir something indescribable WITH IN me.

Last week, I had the honor and privilege to stand (albeit over zoom) among a group of warriors – – – men who have been battling their way out of addiction, clawing their way back from the depths of hell on earth. They are nearing the end of a long journey and preparing to step into the world anew.

As I prepared to share with them what the term “Brotherhood” meant to me, I was reminded of the moment when I first truly understood the word “Brother.” It came from someone I hold dear – – – a friend, a builder, and a fellow disciple of Jesus: Kitty Allen. I will never forget the first time Kitty called me “Brother Jim.”

It was like a big bang in my heart. No one had ever called me “Brother” in such a way – – – rooted in faith, hope, love and a deep knowing of who I truly am. No one had ever seen me through that lens or spoken to me with that perspective. It was transformative.

I’ve never gotten used to it. Even now, when many call me “Brother” with that same depth and understanding, I always remember the first time. I will never forget Kitty – – – her prayers, her belief in me before I even understood prayer or belief myself. It was all God’s grace, Jesus’ embrace, and the Spirit’s space working through her.

Thank you, “Sister” Kitty. Thank you for being the first to call me a “Brother” in Christ. Your faith has helped transform me.

To all who read this, may you know the power of true brotherhood. And if you are ever blessed to hear someone call you “Brother” or “Sister” with meaning that goes beyond the surface, beyond the word itself: hold onto it tightly.

It is a sacred gift.

Your Brother IN Christ,

Jim
