Create space

High achievers are often (usually) drivers. Drivers of productivity. Drivers toward a goal. Drivers of meetings and agendas. What’s the risk if you’re always driving? No one else is given the space to do so, or even to learn how to drive.

Leaders must practice this skill. Builders must live this out in our practices – both one on one and team practices. I’m intensely wired to drive toward excellence. AND, if I don’t shut up in practices, then the practice is limited by my view, my ability. Create the space for others to learn to better drive. The more drivers, the faster we get to the destination. The path to greatness can be muddled, sometimes reverse in direction, rarely a straight clear shot. Slowing down can be painful for drivers. Do it anyway. And then seek the powerful moments to drive home a point, light up a practice, sear someone with truth, redirect if we get too far off course. Wisdom is knowing when to create the space and when to fill it. This requires practice. Do you need to practice creating space or filling it? Get in some reps and get better.

  1. This has been one of the most important lessons I needed to learn before I could really begin to help others. First I had to learn that as much as I want to create incredible spaces for transformative experiences, any space could be the perfect space depending on what you put in it (how you show up) and then I had to learn to lean into the productive pause. God only knows how many nuggets of gold were never shared because I folded and spoke right before another was about to finally open up.
