We all work, play, and perform best at different states of alertness and intensity. Experts would call this an arousal curve. In college athletics, we called it your hype number. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being high energy, where do you perform best? And how do you prepare best for how you’ll perform? I’ve got a client that performs best somewhere around a 7. But leading up to it, his brain conserves energy and he sits at about a 3 or 4.
If you’re not fully tuned into yourself, this can be confusing. Am I not excited for this big event? Am I actually dreading it? Why do I have such low energy? The reality is your brain and body are simply dialed in to the fact that this event matters to you, so they’re helping you prepare by conserving energy, leaving you with a full tank to draw on for the big event.
Perhaps your hype numbers are the reverse. Or perhaps you stay steady around a specific number. Think about when you’ve performed at your best – where were you on that scale? And where were you when preparing for that event? Slow down and pay attention to your hype numbers and then do more of it on purpose.
