Survive then scale

One of my clients is building a company. They’re on a mission to change the industry they’re in for the better. I believe they’ll do it. They’re in startup mode right now and growing quickly with lots of demand for their service. Is it time to bring in more people and scale, they wanted to know?

I challenged them to slow down. Why? Because in the early stages of a startup the name of the game is less about how quickly can I scale, and more about how long can I survive. Build your foundation. Build plenty of runway. Build out your client portfolio. When you’re bursting at the seams and have plenty of runway, then start scaling. Build some stability, then build the scaling on top of it. Scaling on an unsteady foundation means if hard times hit, you’re way too vulnerable.

Survive first. Then scale. Where do you need to build out more runway to prepare for hard times? Or is it time for you to get into growth mode? Get clearer and get moving.
