If someone is gifted the best resources and the best people, it’s possible they could stumble their way to some measure of success. The ability to not screw something up is not universal, but it is simpler than building something from scratch. And maintaining that success is a whole different animal. When you’re on the hunt for young or emerging talent, the question is, which direction are they headed? Are they turning B players into A players? Are they transforming their team and pulling greatness out of them? Or are they taking them in the opposite direction – with A players opting out, B players stalling out at best, and then blaming it on lack of resources?
Great leaders find success with all types and levels. Resources DO matter, and there’s a floor, no doubt. A requisite amount of talent/resources are needed to grow. AND great leaders do not demand the best resources in order to find any measure of success. They are able to take what they have and make it greater than the sum of its parts.
Stop blaming your problems on resources. Start designing a great team and demanding excellence. When you’ve learned to pull the best out of what you have (including yourself), then start demanding more.
