Learn together

A client of mine has an underperforming teammate that reports to her. Inspection is needed. She got some advice that she should go have one on ones with this leader’s team…she didn’t feel right about that. Good. If you want to cut a leader’s legs out from under them AND fail to help them grow, go have 1 one 1s with their team and ask for feedback on their leader. Not good. Not a high performing culture move. In fact it’ll destroy it, I believe. 

Instead, my client leaned in and had the hard conversation and shared her concerns with the leader. Together they’re coming up with a plan to lean in and inspect. Keep inspecting, leader, you owe it to the team and your teammate. AND involve the leader so he or she gets better at inspecting and asking for feedback. All good things. Lean in together, learn together, build together.
