Fault and responsibility

Fault and responsibility are cousins, with some big differences. You CAN be at fault for an event or issue regardless of whether you admit to and own that fault. You cannot be at fault if you didn’t cause something. If you caused it, it is your fault. If you didn’t, it’s not. Very black and white. Fault simply seeks to accurately assign blame.

Responsibility, on the other hand, seeks to take ownership and effectively move forward. You can take responsibility regardless of who caused the event or issue. If you want to be a great leader, get used to taking responsibility – that’s your job. Owning fault is a bare minimum for a great leader. Taking responsibility is a hallmark of one.
