The vast majority of leaders give lip service to excellence. Few live it and create cultures that live and breathe it. There’s a large disparity in that gap between saying and doing. The doing is exceptionally hard. As with most things, the pursuit of excellence starts with clarity.
Are you crystal clear on a definition of excellence for yourself? For your teams and leaders? Do they know what it looks like and what it doesn’t look like? If the answer to any of those is no, then you’re failing as a leader on the baseline.
Once you can answer yes to the above, then the real fun begins. How are you actually living it out? What are you doing about it when you or another falls short? How are you rewarding those teams and individuals who do embody excellence? Are incentives tied to it? How often are you talking about it and explaining the why?
You cannot be too clear. Get started writing. Get crystal clarity. Then figure out some productive actions and start moving toward excellence.
