If you want to know true capacity, measuring is best done in absolute rather than relative terms. In other words, if you want to know what you or your system is capable of, measure your growth against your own standard, and set it aggressively high. If you’re measuring your improvement or standings relative to a competitor and patting yourself on the back for coming out ahead, you may only be hitting a fraction of your capability.
Seeing what peers are doing isn’t a bad thing. A lot can be learned from observing different processes, and certainly competitive fire can unlock new levels of performance.
AND…the work provides the best feedback. What are you capable of? What does excellence look like for you? Set an aggressive goal, regardless of what your peers are doing, and see if you can hit it. If so, demand more of yourself. Rinse and repeat.
