Fear and hurt are the primordial emotions that most dysfunction builds off of. Anger is a way to cover for and avoid fear and hurt, as is numbing. Over-achieving can be another unhealthy way of avoiding the hardest things. Dis-ease is a precursor for disease. The dis-ease you feel at those primordial emotions, and the efforts to avoid those feelings, often leads to diseased ways of living. Perhaps even literal disease itself.
Going there, uncovering the fear and hurt, getting them out in the open…that’s a gift not to be undertaken lightly. It’s a gift to learn that you are the one who can heal your own hurt, you are the one who can build the ability to face fear head on. We mistakenly think that the offending party is the only one who can make things right. The truth is YOU are the only one who can.
As John Rue would say, re-solve in order to resolve. Slow down, write about the pain or the fear, get it all out. Then decide what you want to do with that story, or how you want to act to change your own path. Stop waiting for someone else to set you free – give yourself the gift that you never received.
