Mundane AND magical

Marry the mundane doesn’t necessarily mean commit to doing boring things with no purpose. If they’re simply boring and meaningless tasks, what’s to be gained? Nothing, of course. But not all mundane work falls into that category. Much of what is mundane is meaningful work we want to do, at a deep level. We want to master our craft, we want to cultivate fitness, we want to be fully present with our toddler in his world. We deeply want those things AND we often, on a much shallower level, want a distraction from the hard work of actually doing them. The hard work of practicing our craft, the hard work of another focused workout, the hard work of staying present with my 20 month old while he stacks and unstacks blocks. Mundane. AND magical.

The meaningful can be hard, though deeply rewarding. The entertaining is easy and hollow. Resist the distraction. Resist the allure of easier, of a dopamine hit. Stay with the mundane and find the magic in it. Learn to do hard things well.
