I’ve got a newer client who’s an athlete. Played some ball at a high level. During a practice they mentioned that pulling out a core statement from their writing still feels clunky and foreign…and that they’re good with that and excited to get better at it. One of the things I love about building into an athlete is they intuitively get that building a new skill feels uncomfortable, mechanical, and awkward. They’re not expecting it to flow or be smooth out of the gates, and they embrace that early awkwardness.
When I coached college softball I’d often tell my players (while we were working on a new skill or a mechanical tweak) that if it didn’t feel awkward or uncomfortable they weren’t actually making a change. They might think they were making the change, but their body was simply slipping right back into the comfortable way of performing the skill.
Same is true of any skill. If it doesn’t feel mechanical out of the gates, you’re probably not actually making the change you think you are. Embrace the awkward and lean into it. The more you do, the faster you get to the other side. I’m stoked to watch this client lean in and level up. What awkwardness are you leaning into?
