Another awesome week at BTL that was topped off with another “Pastors Friday.” Today Kary led off with his discovery to “go deep where he is.” Very cool.
Next I reviewed the melody line from my recent practices…and then I asked everyone to write what they heard. This is always magic. As Anais Nin said so long ago, “we do not see things the way they are, we see things the way we are.” It’s really amazing to see different perspectives, especially when you are NOT trying to FIX them.
Mike led us off, I “anded” with a little poem and a couple laughs, John brought some amazing clarity, and then it was Johnny’s turn. Johnny talked about Joel. Seems that young Joel is a “settler.” He is NOT mastering his craft and he’s driving Johnny crazy. Johnny’s voice trailed off as he finished his rant. It was OBVIOUS to me that Joel was NOT the problem. I asked the team if they noticed Johnny’s rush to move along.
THAT was all it took.
The next hour was a surge of questions directed Johnny’s way. He slowly came clean. Here’s a couple things I learned. Johnny owns his own business and he doesn’t know it owns him. Johnny does NOT love his work and therefore, cannot love his life. Johnny is a geologist by education and a carpenter who hasn’t learned how to finish. He loves both of those but is afraid his labor will not be rewarded. Johnny is a 40 year old version of 22 year old Joel. He’s put his own “beek” on the chalk line and bought the lie long ago that he’ll never be more than the limits he learned from his Dad.
Johnny, just like Kary, Larry, Mary, Jeri, and every other Tom, Dick, and Harry has some real, hard, work ahead.
Johnny’s homework was to write what he heard, pony up to a truth teller, talk to Mike, and take a long look in the MIRROR. He turned red a bunch this morning. If he looks, reflects, relates, and risks leaving the line; he might turn even redder. He just might turn into a soul on fire. Very cool.
What are you learning today?
What are you doing with your learnings?
Why are you applying them in your work and life? Why not?
Why are you looking at your “Joels” and not at your mirror?
Why does every meeting in your company feel like slow death?
Would a little conflict actually add some much needed life?
Why? Why? Why?
Do you have any true friends willing to risk your friendship by telling you some “strong truths?”
Do you believe that the fire you are feeling is for your “refining” or just to burn baby burn?
Do you have catalysts willing to suck out your impurities?
How do you know?
Do you seek such friends?
Are you such a friend?
How does it “feel” when you go to work?
Are you mastering your craft or are you laboring in vain, pain, and experiencing only economic gain?
Hey Geo Johnny…remember, we will NEVER master something that we do NOT LOVE.
Hey BTL Builder, what do you believe?

It is always transformational. Thanks Chet….
And the other members of the Friday morning group.
These sessions keep getting better. Who knows what will happen next month…
