Puppies bring energy to old dogs. We’ve all heard this cliche on countless occasions. Let me add another. Trusting your team is a good thing. Being comfortable with those you go to market with, is a good thing. Being surrounded by people that think like you is a good thing. All these things allow you to move faster.
Some of the time.
Every team benefits from injecting energy. Puppies are energy. They have this boundless energy and lack the restraint that comes with “maturity.” They interrupt the status quo. They bring some chaos. They make some messes and they make some smiles. One thing is for sure. You won’t find puppies waiting around. Every team benefits when they have just the right combination of experience and energy. This takes some experimenting and some risk taking by the leaders.
As I study high performance teams I’m beginning to notice a trend separating the “high from those that only try.” Normal teams and leaders tend toward overvaluing experience. They hold on, way too long, to the notion that industry experience is paramount. They look, listen, and lean toward those with experience above ALL.
High performance teams tend toward ENERGY and attitude. They recruit, hire, and build high performers and give them the EXPERIENCE well before they are ready. You can NOT give old dogs energy. You can give them some puppies. The puppies will do the rest. Puppies are measured in terms of energy, not age and not experience.
