Today’s message at Church was all about acquiring WISDOM. What an awesome message by Rich Nathan, the Head Pastor at Vineyard Columbus. He contrasted a “right” vs. “left” approach to wisdom. He challenged all in attendance to understand what causes their “splinters.” He left me thinking about how I always look for explanations to people and events. I’m always trying to find the structure and the order and at the same time, trying to find my own way. I know that I’ve lost most of you by now. I’ll stop.
Anyway, his message made me think about how much life is full of both pattern and mess, structure and chaos, understanding and mystery, and how so much is so hard to comprehend without the combination of head and heart. The study of humankind, for me, feels like it will never end. I am so fascinated by what makes us tick.
I love artists attempt to tell us our story. U2 is my favorite and John Mellencamp is my longest listen. Here’s Mellencamps latest song that has stuck with me. It’s titled, The Longest Days. Check it out and see where it takes you…
“Seems like, ‘once upon a time ago’ I was where I was supposed to be. My vision was true and my heart was too.
There was no end to what I could DREAM…
I walked like a hero into the setting sun, everyone called out my name. Death to me was just a mystery, I was too busy raising a Cain.
But nothing last forever AND the best efforts don’t always pay. Sometimes you get sick and you don’t get better. That’s when life is short even in it’s longest days.
So you pretend not to notice that everything has changed…The way that you look and the FRIENDS that you once had. So you keep on acting the same.
Deep down in your soul. You know you, you got NO FLAME.
And who knows then which way to go. Life is short even in its longest days.
All I got here… is a REARVIEW mirror. Reflections of… where I’ve been.
So you tell yourself…I’ll be back up on top someday. But you know there’s nothing waiting up there for you anyway.
But nothing last forever AND the best efforts don’t always pay. Sometimes you get sick and you don’t get better. That’s when life is short even in its longest days.”
What did you hear?
Can you relate to the pattern and the pain?
Does your strong CORE provide you with a sense of meaning and purpose that transcend your wrinkles, your fickle friends, your floundering portfolio, and your flourishing and fruitful relationships that you are so grateful to have?
Deep down in your soul have you got A FLAME?
Tell me more, my friend, tell me more…
