Have you started your homework?…

Take the Chouinard challenge.

Here it is.  Do NOT miss this.  This is HUGE.  Yvon Chouinard is the president of the outdoor clothing and gear company Patagonia.  I wear their shirts almost exclusively.  They make products and package them out of organic, recycled, and environmentally friendly materials.  They inspire me.  Check out  Yvon’s challenge to his team during one of their “practice” sessions.

“If you want to change government, change the corporations, and governments will follow.  If you want to change corporations, change consumers.  Perhaps the real good that Patagonia could do was to use the company as a tool for social change, as a model to show other companies that a company can do well by taking the long view and doing the right thing.”

Sound like someone you could follow?

Want to learn more about Patagonia and how YOUR company can change the world?

READ, reflect, and ACT.

Read Yvon Chouinards book titled, Let My People Go Surfing.  AND, read Tim Sanders new one.  He’s the guy that gave us the book about how Love is the killer App.  His second book wasn’t worth the time but this one, his third, is!!  Saving the world at work is the title and the tagline is telling…What companies and Individuals can do to go beyond making a profit to making a difference.

Very cool.

If you want to change your system you must become a leader, not a positional one, but one whose position is heard and acted upon.  We mostly follow those that have done their homework when choosing whom to give our whole heart.  Remember, doing your homework to the point of MASTERY is what we’re about.

Mastery…

We’re not trying to build leaders that can fool the team with smart talk and little that is actionable.  Doing your homework means putting in around 10,000 hours of study time toward mastering your craft.  Ten THOUSAND hours is roughly three hours per day, 365 days a year, for ten years.  You choose.  Your choices have consequences.  May I suggest the time to start is NOW.

Homework…

Homework repeated and rinsed over and over and over again produces mastery.  Eventually.

Are you doing yours?

Are you focusing on changing yourself?

Are you well on your way to mastering your craft?

Are you taking the long view regarding your career, your family, your life?

Are you BUILT TO LEAD?
