Pardon the interruption…
All systems seek a static, steady state. This is called equilibrium. Maintaining equilibrium is a good thing most of the time. High performance, however, requires that we jolt ourselves out of this state, out of our comfort zone and into our learning zone. This generally produces panic and massive amounts of resistance. Again, every system is designed to seek a static, steady state. Even high performance ones.
Here’s the rub. The system does NOT make value judgments. It doesn’t care if the change you are trying to make is positive or negative. It simply wants things to continue on as they are. Let me be more specific.
The moment you make the decision to hire BTL and engage in our work to improve you and your teams performance you are going to come face to face with this reality. You are deciding to deeply change.
For the better.
Your internal system is NOT going to go along without a fight. Your internal system does NOT want you to change. Any change is viewed as an “interruption” in the status quo. We know the status quo. We like what we know even if what we know, we know is not good for us. We do?
Can this be true?
Your external system sees change just like you do; as the enemy. Your team is going to fight this change too. Even when the “new you” is so much better than the “old you.” They will cry out for the one they used to know. Interrupting any system is, well, almost unpardonable. Let me be more personal.
The moment you decide to stop drinking after two drinks instead of after five or six drinks your internal system is going to throw a hissy fit. Your little voice will start to scream to you that you are dying of thirst. “How can one more little taste hurt?” “Just give me one more drink and we’ll call it a night at three.” Your internal system does not want to change even though limiting your drinking and building your team are both CHANGE you can believe in.
CHANGE for the better.
The main reason that we backslide to old habits, even destructive ones personally, socially, and professionally is simply because they are habits that have become so deep that they’ve become a crucial part of our systems steady state. Do you see it?
The road to mastery will require you to break lots of habits along the way. Do NOT miss this. This is HUGE. Here it is…
Prepare for PAIN and resistance to your CHANGE.
