Masters in and of anything are lifelong learners. They never sense that they have arrived. Obviously, this requires deep seeded humility. This is so attractive when you get the chance to see it. I have some such clients. Very cool.
I was with one today and my challenge to him, might have some application to you. We were reviewing his productive action from our time together. BTW, this is the formula for being built. We help you clarify your vision and purpose and then we invest 1o,000 hours with you mastering this together. It’s really that simple and it’s really that hard. Moving on.
Today we gained some clarity around how masters learn this mastery of their craft and their life. My client had communicated one of his productive actions around his learning objectives. He was right on the money. He had picked a couple “rock stars” in his industry to study. He had picked a couple “principles” that were good choices to master. He had set a clear learning direction even regarding the specific “certifications” that would carry the weight and the appropriate knowledge for his chosen career.
I “anded.”
My “and” was simple and often missed. Here it is. Do NOT miss this.
I asked him to study, learn, and apply a couple different perspectives. Study a couple people who had reached a level of mastery, in his industry, that did NOT align with his approach. Their methodology, their approach was the opposite of his. Their principles and their process were wildly successful but just NOT ones that he was wild about. True masters understand and are always learning more about “their way.” Very cool.
The best ones are also studying a thousand other ways. These are the ones we tend to follow. They not only know their approach cold, they know enough about the alternatives, their competitors, if you will, to sway you and me toward “their way.” Talk about the highway…
Where are you on the road to mastering your craft?
First off, do you LOVE it enough to study, learn, and apply for 10,000 hours?
Are you mastering other perspectives?
Are you learning from those that see things completely opposite from you?
Are you building “domain specific knowledge” and maintaining your humility at the same time?
Yea, BABY…
