YOUR Top Ten List

TEN. Start with the ten commandments for your spiritual, ethical, and equitable grounding. Whether you consider yourself “religious” or not, the ten commandments carry as much historical and ethical weight as any code of law, ever.

NINE. Players on a baseball team. Each with separate AND cohesive roles. All play offense and defense (at least in the National League). It’s a poor manager who tries to get them all to be “well-rounded” rather than the best they can be in their position by utilizing their own unique strengths. Think about it.

EIGHT. Essentials of Leading Teams. Thank you, BUILT TO LEAD. Trust, Personal Excellence, Team, Culture, Leaders, Vision, Results, and Legacy. Study, learn, and apply them. We’ll help.

SEVEN: Habits of Highly Effective People. Proactive, Goal Guided, Priority Oriented, Listeners who Think Win-Win and Synergize with others while taking time to refresh their physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual selves are more highly effective than the average joe. (Sorry, Joe). They have more fun, too.

SIX: Pack. As in a strong CORE. Your Worldview, Principles, and Identity define who you are and what you believe. Passions, Purpose, and Process define what you love and how you are called to live and work. Want to lead? Then answer “who are you and where are you taking us?”

FIVE: Great human fears. Fear of death, the outsider, chaos, the future, and insignificance. Leaders therefore address these fears with fair pay and reasonable job security; a culture of teamwork and community; orderly processes and systems; clarity of vision and purpose; and meaningful work and recognition.

FOUR: Essential roles of the CEO. 1.) Taskmaster–sets performance expectations and holds the organization to account for results; 2.) Designer–of the operating systems and structure of the organization; 3.) Motivator–Chief Cultural Officer and inspiration for the people; and 4.) Vision Setter–seeing the future direction and inviting others into it to bring it about. Top leaders build all four capabilities.

THREE: Questions. For developing your purpose (aka “Hedgehog Concept”)–1. Passions: What are we passionate about? 2.) Strengths: What could we be best in the world at? 3.) Obligations: What drives our economic engine? At the intersection of all three lies a potential answer to “why are we here?” These questions work on a personal level, too.

TWO: By The Power of. Two. You AND us, working together, to constantly improve personal excellence and build exceptional individuals, teams, and leaders in work and life. That’s what The Band of Builders LOVES to do. It’s our Opus.

ONE: Integrity. Literally “becoming whole,” or “one” by eliminating all gaps between the ideal self and the actual self. There is no basis for authentic leadership without integrity. BUILT TO LEAD helps transform collections of individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE team that is BUILT TO LEAD.
