A couple ways to celebrate the big Five 0…

The trip to France was my way of celebrating my big Five 0.  I figured you only turn 50 once and it’s quite a milestone number that warrants a special celebration.  I decided to take on the biggest mountain climbs in the Tour De France as my way of celebrating.  Yes, I’m not normal.

Upon return, I’ve taken back up my three week respite from work and from reading.  I’ve really enjoyed getting back after it with my family, friends, and clients this week.  It’s been good to re-engage in this work that is such a big part of my life.  I’m reading another Frost classic at the moment titled, The Match.  It’s quite a story about the game that changed the game of golf.  It’s a game between two professionals, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson against two amateurs named Harvie Ward and a car salesman named Ken Venturi.  This game changed the game of golf.

Forever.

Here’s the contrast to my big Five 0.  Byron Nelson, one of the greatest golfers of all time and also one of the games most successful professionals celebrated his big 0 Five  with little fan fare.  He wasn’t taken by the family on a trip to Paris.  He didn’t ride with his friends up the most massive of mountains.  He didn’t dine on the River Seine or even the Rio Grande.  He didn’t stay in the south of France or hang out with the rich and famous on the French Riviera.  Here, instead, is how he celebrated his 5th birthday.

His parents bought him his FIRST pair of shoes.

I really do NOT know what it means to really struggle.

Do you?

Tell me more, my fellow American, tell me more….
