Three getting what they deserve…

Today I encountered three leaders in three different systems.  One is in the service space, one digs, and one prints.  All are frustrated for similar but different reasons.  And, all are really cool clients.  Who knew…

One is troubled by his inability to reproduce a sales system.  Another is troubled by his inability to “sell” the system on the road to excellence.  AND, one is simply pissed at, what he perceives as, his KING.  Oh yeah, I’m oversimplifying for certain but, you get the point.

All three want to be heard, want to be understood, and want help fixing the problem.  

All received some good questions and some clarity from their builder. AND, don’t miss this, all three are on their own for translating what they learned into their development.  The same is true for you and me.  This is simply the way it works.  Do you see it?

Want a better sales team?

Become a better sales leader.  Hire for attitude and train for skill.  NEVER reverse the equation.  NEVER.

Teach them about your products, your services, your value proposition, your competition, your discovery process, your best closing techniques, your sister divisions, and keep teaching.  Be with them.  Be an advocate for them.  Teach them your stories and keep teaching until they are on the road to mastery.  Turn up their ideas and throw fuel on their fires.  Allow them to influence where we’re heading.  AND, fire the bad attitude and the incompetent or lazy learner.  Fire.  

Want the team to follow your road map to excellence?

Become a better leader.  Hold them accountable.  Be fair and firm.  Be disciplined in the consequences for straying from your highway. Reward those that follow your road map and those that add “shortcuts” that are well thought out “ands” to your plan.  Know why some stray from the path.  Pour fuel on those ideas that make sense and burn those that are simply insubordinate or lazy.  Fire.

Want a better KING?

Be one.  Demonstrate what it looks like by really leading your kingdom.  Stop waiting for the KING to move and lead him to your highway. Study history and you’ll see this everywhere you look.  Stop waiting and stop whining.  Lead your part of the kingdom like it’s really yours. And, remember this fact.   If you are choosing to be paid by the KING of your system, than earn it.  Simple as that.  Or, you should be ready to fire or to be fired.

Remember, every leader gets exactly the team he or she deserves.
