Into The Wild, the book, the movie, the story, the music and the cast of characters that Sean Penn arranged…
Changed me.
Today, with very different clients I used the Directors Disc as a tool to better understand them. Movies and music are great tools toward that end. Today, however, the results were staggering to my little mind.
They just were.
I could NOT imagine that a couple Americans could see, smell, taste, hear, and practically touch the exact same scene and translate nothing, remotely the same. One saw the futility of the effort. The carelessness and selfishness of the main character. AND, was blind to all the examples of OPUS. The other saw only OPUS and more OPUS. Who knew?
Remember, Anais Nin, another dead, crazy lady said long ago, “we do not see things the way they are, we see things the way we are.”
As you lead your teams toward your 2020 vision with 20/20 clarity, remember that they are looking through “double tunnel vision” goggles. Your job, as their leader, is to know them well enough to know their perspective and inspire them to broaden it. Your job is NOT to simply tell them where we’re headed and why it’s important. Your job, as their leader, is to connect them in a very real and personal way to your vision.
They do NOT see things the way you want them to nor do they see things the way that you do. They see things the way they do because of who they are, because of their perspective. This does not make you right and them wrong. This simply clarifies that you and they are…
UNIQUE.
Have you done the real, hard, work to clarify your 2020 vision with 20/20 clarity?
What are you doing to connect your team toward that end?
What are you doing to learn about your “cast of characters” and really understand their perspective?
What are you doing to broaden your own, perspective that is?
Why does all this sound like freakin’ magic to some and smell like shit to others?
Why are you leading, anyway?
Tell me more, my friend.
Tell me more…
