Soft leaders…

During practice yesterday with one of my clients that has a great opportunity to be alive in 2020, Steve asked me why so many companies were going extinct during this difficult time.  He always asks great, piercing questions.

I don’t have many answers.

After I thought for a moment, I offered Steve and the team my two cents as to the root cause for so many in decline, so many on their death bed, and so many already in the ground.

Soft leaders.

We have too many leaders that have the bad habit of not stepping up to the problem the moment they sense there is one.  We have too many leaders that are hoping the problem will go away on it’s own.  We have too many leaders that have made too much green for their own good.  They have bought the lie that they earned it and now they just want to sit back and enjoy the fruit of their hard labor.  These are NOT leaders.  AND, they are everywhere…

The companies that will make it to live out their 2020 vision will be led by caring BTL leaders that have big dreams, well thought out strategies, rigorous plans of productive action, high bars that they demand we hurdle, and that deal each and every associate with the truth in LOVE.

Are you leading a team toward extinction or toward your big dream?

Can you prove it to me, to them, to your customers, to your board, and to your front line associates?

Does the team believe the vision and drive their day accordingly?

Are you tolerating long term associates that don’t make you better simply because they’ve “been with you” since the early days?

Does your culture challenge everyone to carry their weight and learn to carry some more?

Do you mistake screaming during an off month, spinning the message, truth in anger, and making cut after cut after cut, with strong leadership?
