C.S. Lewis will always remain one of my favorite writers. He has a way with words well beyond my reach oftentimes. And yet his aptitude coupled with my ineptitude, doesn’t cause me to want to put him down, close his book, and give up grasping. He inspires me to reach. I am currently re-reading Surprised by Joy, his autobiography and was struck by his descriptions of his father.
He and his father were not particularly close in any season of his life. Clive was often frustrated by his Dad’s poor hearing. He would ask Clive a question but would “rarely stay for the answers.” AND...”he was a man not easily informed. His mind was too active to be an accurate receiver.”
As leaders we over estimate the importance of sending.
Tomorrow, slow down your mind. Turn off your technology. Ask your team some great questions. Stay around for the complete answer. Practice becoming an accurate receiver.
Tell them what you heard.
Clive is talking. He requires your full attention to comprehend. So does your team. Funny, huh…
