Shrink to expand…

The value of an idea has always had a limited shelf life.  Historically the shelf life was elongated on purpose because the “idea guy” benefited from keeping the idea behind the hidden walls of the “black box.”  The bigger your black box of ideas, the more value you brought to your team and the more reward you were given by your King to stay in the kingdom.

The value of an idea today has shrunk and expanded.  The idea guys of 2010 are taking their best ideas and opening up the black box to you and to me.  They understand that the world has changed and that the most valuable guys in the world make their world more valuable.  The shelf life has shrunk.  Stop holding onto yours and maintaining some kinda black box mentality.  This is no longer the Dark Ages, remember.

Take your expertise and share it with me.  You just increased your value to me and to my world.  As long as you keep mastering your craft, your ideas will keep coming and they’ll keep coming like never before.  You’ll still be ahead in the idea game.  Funny, huh.

Every week I still see teams that hoard their ideas and purposely hide them from their teams down the hall, across the street, or around the world.  They don’t even seem to share some obvious solutions that would help their own department because they’re afraid of losing credit.  Are you kidding me.  Nope.

Ideas have a limited shelf life.  You’ve got to shrink to expand.

Shrink your own ideas shelf life and multiply your influence.  Start giving away your best ideas.

You’ll be amazed at what expands…

  1. How about also “The Rational Optimist” by Matt Ridley? He explains how the uniquely human need to connect and exchange goods and ideas has overcome fear with trust throughout much, but sadly not all of our history. It is the root cause of all human progress, and it will bring us to new levels of prosperity and peace if we just keep connecting and exchanging.
