Today, one of my young stud clients told me how he was going to play it safe, keep his options open, and give half of his heart to one of the top 5 opportunities in his well defined world. He was simply being reasonable, or so he thought. He and I both know better…
I told him to grow some “Shannonballs.” He doesn’t know Shannon. He’s never met Shannon and yet he knew exactly what I meant. I LOVE the language that unites all our clients, even those that will never meet. Very cool.
Back to my high performance client. As his builder, I could have been a ton more understanding. I could have tried to feel what he was feeling. I could have showed him some sympathy. I could have agreed with his argument that he really is too busy to do it right. I could have simply said nothing and let him off the hook with a look. I could have responded in any number of ways. I chose to challenge. Builders challenge.
I challenged him.
Want to know if you have a team of high performers or a team of victims?
Challenge ’em.
Their response is the answer.
The real question, however, is “how you responding?”
Remember, every leader gets exactly the team he or she deserves. Want a better team? Become a stronger leader. Want a better client? Become a better builder.
Builders challenge. AND, you are only as good as the arguments you get.
Who is challenging you?
Who on your team needs more of your challenge and less of your listening?
Who on your team needs your ear?
Who on your team needs a kick in the rear?
Who needs some more time playing, some time laughing, some time together with your few, and some big dream worth struggling toward?
You, that’s who…
Builders challenge.
