We believe that 28 55 17 are three of the most important numbers in the world of work. We just do.
Gallup put these out a few years back and they keep putting them out every couple years as they re-survey Americans and their level of engagement in their work. According to Gallup, one of the most trusted names in America, 28% of us are engaged at work, 55% are disengaged, and 17% are actively disengaged.
Translation. Where you work, less than 30% of the folks are gettin’ ‘er done, more than half are going through the motions, and almost 20% are terrorists.
This is some kinda bad news.
Whenever we review this fact during a BTL practice, we ask the team what we should do with these numbers. The answers are boldly proclaimed that we should each look at our teams and step up to the terrorists that we all KNOW are out there. The folks that we’ve talked about for two years now that just can’t seem to step up, are always over budget, underperforming, and doing it all with some kinda attitude. In fact, each leader seems to have crystal clarity on where most of the terrorists live.
On some other leaders team.
The first thing we do is not evaluate the team. Do not miss this. The question that we always ask the leaders to answer is this one. It’s really simple.
What bucket are YOU in?
Answer this with supporting evidence. Think like a trial lawyer and write your argument.
What bucket would your team mates say you’re in?
What bucket would your boss say you’re in?
What bucket would your followers say you’re in?
What bucket would your spouse say you’re in?
What bucket would you children say you’re in?
Why? Why? Why?
Why is it so hard to see ourselves with 20/20 clarity and yet so easy to see you?
God, help me fix my biggest leadership challenge first.
God, help me fix me…
