A former client asked me the most frequent question volleyed between business guys around the globe. It’s a classic, and like “lets do lunch,” doesn’t require much thought and doesn’t carry any weight.
He asked, “How’s business?” I responded with my “go to” response of “it’s good.” I didn’t give him the truth because it would exceed his attention. Here’s 2% of the truth. Hope it doesn’t exceed yours. I’ve been told that I often exceed my 2% rule. I’m working on it…
Business has never been better. NEVER. Here’s why.
Our clients are better. The BTL message is best heard by young ears. The BTL message is best experienced by diverse teams. The BTL message is best brought to life by collections of collaborators. AND, the BTL band has finally experimented enough to have stumbled into something that is finally beginning to taste somewhat sticky. It just is.
The real answer to how’s business, for me, is that it’s never been better. Notice that I didn’t say, bigger. My favorite scorecard for significance has nothing to do with revenue and nothing to do with profit. My favorite scorecard for significance that gets me all jacked up is really measurable and really weird.
Why is business better at BTL? Our clients are better, period.
How do I know that our clients are better? Really simply.
At the end of every practice session, with every client, we agree to something REAL and something HARD. We agree to a few productive actions that will move the client forward. This is the most revealing five minutes of every meeting. AND, here’s what different.
Our clients are actually doing what we’ve agreed to in their playbook of productive action, their PoP.
This is how I know that business has never been better. More and more of our clients are starting to do something that’s kinda weird. More and more clients are doing what they say they’re going to do. They are stepping up. They are stepping out of their comfort zone. They’ve gotten clarity of their overarching vision and they’re going for it. They are challenging themselves to just say, “done so.” AND, we’re making great progress because I don’t have to keep reviewing the same old problems. Funny, huh.
How’s business?
How do you know?
What is your scorecard and why is it significant?
Tell me more, my friend.
