Worldview correction…

During yesterdays practice with the new and improved team of 9, we started and ended by building our transverse abdominus muscles. We started with 30 minutes of planking and pushing. We ended with the song, “I believe in You,” by Bob Dylan while planking away for 5 plus minutes straight.

Sandwiched in the middle was hours of “planking” our worldviews with uncommon clarity. And, the amazing thing was that it didn’t even hurt. We paired up and helped illuminate where our worldviews needed some “correction.” I’ve facilitated more than 10,000 hours of practices by now, and although I am far from a master, yesterday’s felt like a masterpiece.

TRUST was everywhere. Corrections were occuring between builders that 18 months ago would have caused a crushing not a clarifying. I heard pairs tell each other, after they had just been corrected with precision, “Ohhhh I like that, My that makes so much more sense, thanks for the correction.” I could NOT believe what I was hearing. I could not believe what I was seeing. I could not believe what I was feeling. I was witnessing a team taste some flow, and they likee.

Everybody walked out tired and better understood. Everybody walked out energized and more understanding. Everybody walked out together, not in a forced way, in a “I want to be with you way.” This is chemistry. This is the stuff of high performance. It just is…

Everybody walked out with a stronger CORE.

Why is it that most leaders in the world of work expect the team to improve its performance without the discipline of practice?

Why is it so hard to receive correction from someone you haven’t gotten tired with?

Why is it that we think we can build something sustainable without putting in the 10,000 hours of practice?

Why? Because we’ve got a worldview that is in need of some correction, that’s why…

  1. I think culture promotes the “quick fix.” It used to be, you would see Olympic Athletes train for 4 years to reach the pinnacle of their athletic career. Now, you see people signing deals for reality TV shows and reaching their “pinnacle” overnight. The more of this we see, the more “entitled” we become…that the “pinnacle” is there for the taking…..overnight…..You just need to get noticed. It’s a struggle that I think will continue to be a challenge into the future.
