There is a dark side to emerging adulthood that “Friends,” “Modern Family,” and I’m certain the new show “Suburgatory” fail to address. After just digesting my first read of, Lost in Transition, I’m more convicted of the purpose of our work, and more convinced that this is going to be a really painful process.
Our freedoms, as Viktor Frankl saw from afar so long ago, will not last long when the statue of liberty is not bookended with the statue of responsibility. We have become a society that lacks a clear purpose for why we are here and, of course, hasn’t a clear vision for going forward.
The change, for most of us, has always been about what is wrong with the system, our politicians, and the lack of leadership from the generation in power. In reality, the change in any system starts when somebody cares enough to die trying. Change always begins with one.
I, for one, have got some REAL, HARD, WORK, ahead of me. I have long enjoyed my freedom. It’s time for me to transition toward enjoying my responsibilities too. The truth is nothing changes around me until something changes in me…
“There is only one cure for the malady that afflicts our culture, and that is to speak the truth about it. Once we bring ourselves to do that, it will be time to worry about ‘constructive solutions,’ ‘practical proposals,’ and social alternatives’ for our young – discussions of which, so long as they are so absurdly premature, serve only to distract our attention from the truth about ourselves.”
Christopher Lasch
God, help me model the way, embrace pain and suffering, and embody truth in LOVE at least some of the time, with some of your people, and outside my normal sphere.
