Character is who you are. Your reputation is who others think you are.
You cannot control your reputation. Joe Paterno’s reputation, at the moment, is taking a deep dive. This is happening outside his control. He wants control. He wants it bad. He cannot control his reputation and neither can you or I.
Focus on what you can control. Remember, this is mental health 101. Focus on your character. Strengthen your CORE. Close your own integrity gaps. Admit your mistakes and say nothing when you do something virtuous. Do not surround yourself with “yes men” that tell you that what you want to hear. Build a few truth tellers and ask them to help you face your character flaws and get after fixing ’em. Stop focusing on the fact that your not Joe, so you’re doing just fine.
Focus on what you can control, your character.
God, help me focus on my character. God, help me understand your character. God, help me admit my faults and hold quietly onto whatever virtues we’ve built within. God, help me build a few truth tellers. God, chisel me into your masterpiece.
God, you’ve got some chiseling to do with me, with Joe, there’s just no way for me to know. God, help me focus on what I can control…
