Make me do what I can…

I asked my client, after he had finished giving me his update, what had he said that would concern me.  He paused and took a moment to think.  Then he nailled it.  He had told me about a meeting with his team that had gone well because one of his key leaders wasn’t there to “monkey around with it.”

The next 30 minutes we explored the specifics behind his comment.  I asked my client to write out what he was going to tell his leader to eliminate my concern.  His first rinse was good but it lacked specificity and clarity. His second rinse was better, it was CCD and very concrete, but it still was missing something.  It lacked a punch, I told him.  I asked him to pretend he was Bill Self, coach of the jayhawks, and was in the middle of a game.  He had just called a timeout and had a performance issue to address with one of his players.  Add that kinda edge to it, I told him.

He did.

His third rinse was FM, baby.  He nailed it.  His voice, his words, his way and very BTL.  Together we further refined the process for delivering this feedback and for getting his leader to own the process.  And, I asked him to extrapolate to another one of his leaders.

He did.

Our practices are getting more and more productive because we’ve developed a trust and a connection through our tough practices together. This client has responded to my challenges and knows how much I care. He’s getting comfortable doing the same with his team.

Who is making Y.O.U. do what you can? Who are you making do what they can?

And, who couldn’t use a little more Jayhawk kinda examples in their life 🙂

Tell me more, my friend.
