Normal leaders focus on the problem children. They think they have time to focus on their high performers, especially if their high performers are quiet and just putting up results. Normal leaders assume they have time to give their high performers what they want. Normal leaders are making an all too common mistake. This mistake bites them suddenly but it’s been barking at them for years. The problem is they’ve been too busy with all kinda noisy, and needy problem children to tune into the background bark from their top dog. Funny, huh.
The BTL builder is a bit different. The BTL builder authors their OPUS and invests their time connecting this to their team. This creates a team that knows where they’re going. And, the BTL builder invests their time in helping their top performers author their own OPUS. This creates a team of a few high performers that are on fire. This fire comes from deep within and doesn’t require a fistfull of dollars, everytime it rains, to keep it lit.
Normal leaders focus on the wrong things simply because it’s easier and less chaotic. Untl it’s NOT.
Your job, if you’re a leader, is to invest your limited time in the most productive fashion. It may be more chaotic, for awhile, to fire a bunch of poor performers and fuel the fire of a few. It won’t be for long.
