“We awaken, challenge, and together we transform a few individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE, distinct and deeply connected that is BTL.” This is why we’re here.
Today, lets unpack why our purpose is to build strong individuals, teams, and leaders, in that order. Most leadership development efforts focus on building teams. Company upon compnay buys this pill. One more retreat, the leaders think, and we will become unified. One more program and we’ll have real trust around here. One more seminar and we’ll turn this team around. One more trip to Vegas, Florida, Upstate NY, and we’ll be jellin’.
At BTL, we believe your greatest leadership challenge is leading yourself. This is why our purpose starts with Y.O.U. becoming ONE. All humans battle inner demons more than outer. All humans struggle to figure themselves out, find their voice, and overcome their fear, once they do, to actually belt it out and really sing. As you begin to build your CORE and author your worldview, identity, and principles, your inner clarity builds. As you remember your childlike passions and begin to play in their direction your sense of purpose comes to light. And, as you commit to your process, your playbook of productive action, all these elements gain strength and convert your CORE into your sCORE. Now we’re talking…
As we build the leader or a few leaders individually into ONE, we begin to practice with a few more and then a few more. Slowly we begin to build the team. Slowly the team begins to learn how to trust. Slowly, through real, hard, work that we call practice, the team begins to unify. This takes years and isn’t linear. This frustrates nearly every leader, especially once they have their own clarity. Funny, huh.
Our purpose is to simply keep practicing. We understand that purposeful practice is the only way to taste team chemistry and this is the ONE we want. So, we carry on. “Rinse and repeat.” “One more time, please.” “Seven more good minutes with your CFO, please.” “Another repair job, Mr. Leader.” “CCD again.” “I don’t believe you.” “Tell me more.” And, on and on it goes. We practice with the team as a part of the teams discipline. We don’t practice for awhile or until it’s not fun. We practice.
As a result of this commitment to practice, the system will grow. We can’t predict how fast and don’t bother to try. We simply know it’s coming, if it hasn’t already arrived. And, with growth comes the need to build the next generation of leaders before we need them. This is why our purpose contains specific language about building leaders too. The next generation, before we need them. All teams must transition power, few do it well. Most failures in the world of work are due to this last piece being neglected. The current leader figures that the next will simply “figure it out,” as they did. Few do. We assume nothing. We build.
Our purpose is to build individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. This is why we’re here. We hope this unpacking is helping you. It certainly is helping us…
