Practice 29 was some kinda magic, yesterday. Practice 29 had the head of the system churping. He was finally seeing a payback from his HUGE investment of time doing what few do. Practice, all of a sudden, looked like the best idea he had ever had.
Practice pays. Just not immediately.
Yesterday as the team of twenty something watched, four crazies connected their OPUS to some newbies. As they role played this, side by side, the noise level was incredible. The questions were piercing and the answers moreso. This team has gotten so weird and that’s exactly the way we want it. You see, normal teams choose to spend way too much time actually “killing time” talking about who said what about you know who, or some other waste of time talking about how good things would be “if only.”Of course “if only” always involves somebody else. Things would be great if only xyz wasn’t in my way. Things would be great if only I had the time to date somebody great and gorgeous. Things would be great if I moved to Kentucky, became a land baron, all while sipping some kinda bourbon with great and gorgeous. Funny, huh.
The truth is that the only “if only” choking you from your calling, is your FEAR.
Lauren faced hers and laughed at it, eventually. It only took for freakin’ ever, or so it seemed. It only took her some kinda crazy number of rinses. It only took her leader, patiently challenging her to push out of her comfort zone. It only took her grabbing the reins and saying enough of this settling shit. It only took her coming to grips that she is the only “if” in the equation. And, all of a sudden, she’s headed a new direction. All of a sudden, she’s got some kinda giddyup in her step and some kinda cool conviction in her voice. Call it “calling” or whatever other label you like. I like to call it OPUS. Lauren just thinks it’s really cool.
All of a sudden…
You will not discover your calling by sitting still. You will not discover your calling by reading about anothers. You will not discover your calling by hearing your teammates tell you about theirs. You will discover your calling by tuning into what gives you energy, getting clarity about “why,” and experimenting like a banchee. You may find it on the first rinse, the first practice, or the first chance you take. You most likely will find it when you least expect “it” to show up. Like Lauren, you gotta face your FEARS and feel like you’re risking it all. Like Lauren, you’ve got to settle in for some long, hard practices. Maybe, around practice 29 or so, all of a sudden “it” shows up…
Gman, are you listening? I’m talking to Y.O.U.. What “if only” is holding you back?
Tell me more, my friend.
Tell me more…
