Today, a client of mine received some “worldview correction.” You see, he had mistakenly convinced himself that he was being victimized by another. He was believing that he did NOT have a choice in the matter. He now sees the error in his thinking and the insecurity that drove his mind. Most leaders rarely receive this kinda correction from the team with which they work. The price is too high for the team unless the team has the wiring of some kinda krazy kiesha (see yesterday’s rant). And, most leaders, when they get the chance to have one of their “blindspots” illuminated by one of their teammates, instead of letting it in and choosing to learn, they instead choose to do what comes naturally…
They give ’em the Heisman. They give ’em triple D. They defend their position, deny the need to change, and destroy the argument (oftentimes at the expense of the messenger). This leader remains in the dark. CEO disease is creeping in.
CEO disease, remember, is some nasty shit that plagues all kinda leaders in all kinda high places. CEO disease is an information vacuum. The higher up you get in any kinda system, the more you will tend to live in a land that is void of the truth. The higher up you go, the more the team will simply tell you what they think you want to hear. Slowly and surely, the average CEO falls out of touch with reality. This is a disease and leads to all kinda “mis-informed” decisions. And, it all starts with a few Heismans that mostly go unnoticed to the one throwing ’em around. Funny, huh.
Today, a strong client of mine got stronger because he heard some unvarnished truth from a few. A “damn few.” A “damn few” that care about him and about his company. Today, a strong client got stronger because he thickened his skin, faced his insecurities, and allowed a few to come alongside and build into him.
How ’bout you? Did you get stronger today? Do you have some truth tellers in your work and life? Do you consistently ask them to illuminate your blind spots? Are you a master of hearing the nuance that could make you better and learning how to apply it, or are you a master at Triple D?
Tell me more, my friend.
Tell me more…
