Twenty One Pilots, Tay, and Tyler’s theme…

Twenty One Pilots rocked the LC again on friday night. Tay was fighting for his life somewhere in the sea of bodies crammed toward the stages edge. Miss and I were in safer waters up in the balcony and away from the craziness. Still felt like we were in the fray. The entire place was electric and it seemed as if everybody knew every lyric and wanted to be heard. The twitter feeds on either side of the stage were just another example of how engaged the audience appeared. Funny how much energy a two piece band can generate.

The theme of this night according to Twenty One Pilots Tyler Joseph will surprise you. The theme wasn’t “let’s go crazy so we don’t go crazy tonight.” The theme wasn’t “let’s party like a rock star” either. The theme wasn’t “lets make love, not war” either. The theme was very sobering. Tyler’s self proclaimed theme for the bands celebration last friday in front of countless dj’s from NYC checking them out, wasn’t nearly as uplifting as their sound. The theme was simply, “Stay alive.”

I’m certain this thought was mostly lost on the gray hairs like me. You can bet, however, that the young target audience connected. Tyler’s been writing about what he sees, you see. And he sees a generation that has it all and it all doesn’t add up. He sees an epedemic of depression, cutting, and thoughts of throwing in the towel. So, he sings about it.

He and I have a similar aim. We want to wake up our target audience. We want them to come alive. We want them to tune into what they’re thinking and turn it toward the positive. We want them to realize that they can change the world. And, we both want them to understand that we know what it’s like to feel alone.

Today, my friend, don’t just stay alive; come alive. And, remember, that God promises to never leave you nor forsake you. Hold onto that thought. And maybe just maybe, the migraine in your head will be erased by His presence in your heart.

God, help me come alive in You. God, help me…
