Real leaders ask…

And, remember leaders, your team is mostly afraid of you. Few will ever tell you the truth. You must take the lead in repairing relationships you feel certain were broken before you.

Real leaders ask their team for feedback.

Easy questions like “How can I get better,” “Tell me more,” followed by “Here’s what I heard.” Easy questions as long as they come from a strong CORE and a humble heart. And, once this feedback has been rinsed for crystal clarity, real leaders spell out their own specific, concrete, and productive action they refer to as a baby step and ask if they’ve hit the mark.

Over time, through smooth sailing and shit storms, this couple, company, community, or even country gets stronger and stronger. All systems require leadership. And, real leaders are slow to emerge and reticent to run. Leadership scares the real leader. He or she understands the responsibility and only begrudgingly steps to the front. Leaders understand the minute they stop getting better is the same second complacency lays root systemwide.

Real leaders, therefore, develop the discipline of asking their team for feedback. When was the last time you asked? When was the last time you asked your problem child? When was the last time you asked your rival? When was the last time you asked your bride? When was the last time you asked your truth teller? When was the last time you translated what you heard into specific, concrete, and actionable baby steps to get better?

Tell me more leader. Tell me more…
