Why are there so few humans who live the life they dream about?
The root is simple to see and really hard to change. The root reason is they get Bono’s life thought backward. Bono, lead singer of U2, has authored a statement he lives his life by. “Vision over visibility.” FM, baby.
The vast majority of humans flip the thought and live their life by choosing “visibility over vision.” And, here’s the real root. Since we’re mostly driven by the real “F” word, fear, we don’t see very well. We mostly see our junk; lots of junk. Fixing our eyes on our junk is the root of our demise. We hold onto the mess kinda like a hoarder holds onto theirs. The mess attracts mess. Pretty soon all this human sees are their mistakes, mis-steps, and mess after mess after mess. This creates an eye problem of sorts. Overwhelmed with what they see, they don’t dream and eventually don’t do.
The recipe is to recognize we’re all broken and we’ve all got junk. The brain can only focus it’s attention on one mess at a time so STOP overwhelming it by focusing it on fifteen.
STOP.
Pick one mess of your making and clean it up. Make it an easy one. Maybe you’ve made a mess of your physical health and you have a vision for finally getting in shape. Don’t dream big and write out your ideal weight, body composition, and freakin’ dress size. Clean up one small mess at a time. Decide to walk for thirty minutes twice this week, as an example. Then do it. At the end of the week when you’ve done it, your brain will signal a sense of satisfaction and sign up for a bit more. Go slowly. Rinse and repeat for awhile before raising the bar. A healthy, physical life can be had. For most, we’ve kinda made a mess of it. One mess at a time, clean it up.
As you step into one mess at a time, you esteem yourself. You become less of a mess. You see less junk in your way. As the brain frees itself from hoarding mess after mess, your perspective changes. You see progress. You see possibilities. You see the process and become energized by stepping into junk instead of staring at it. And, your brain begins to see beyond the day to day and simply surviving. It starts to widen its perspective and look longingly into its future. Instead of catastrophizing, this brain begins to think creatively again. Dreams return in a kinda childlike way, only better. Very cool. And, the coolest part? A human will soon be choosing vision over visibility.
Do you see it?
