Practice 45 was magic. We went nowhere new. We simply shared where we are, honestly. Once the team of seven spoke and listened to everyone but the head (he chose to pass) we asked each other curious questions leading toward a deeper understanding.
We learned once we’re overwhelmed with emotions we aren’t able to think rationally. We learned it’s lonely leading anything. We learned the team needs nearly constant reminders. We learned normal humans wait too long to write, speak, or ACT. We learned leaders are remembered not by how well they rush to judge, but by how well they STAND, often uncomfortably, with those they’ve found wanting. We learned leaders often appear inconsistent even when they’re not. We learned we have a much higher bar for leaders than for ourselves. We learned a ton. We were moved. Real, raw emotions were felt and fought. We made progress as we practiced the art of regulating our emotion, getting to its root, and deciding to use our rational minds to rein it in.
Emotions are meant to move us. Rational thinking is meant to protect us. Wisdom is knowing when to lean into which. Leaders embrace this paradox. Actually, leaders lead us through this paradox everyday. Leaders get comfortable with ambiguity.
Are you?
