Confluence of thought AND creative thinking…

Today, during practice 30, we broke a bunch of rules. A couple people talked about their faith and one talked about their lack thereof. A CFO told us how much he loves Monday BTL practices. Turns out he loves being surprised. Funny, huh.

One teammate asked for challenges and wasn’t sure how we could respond since her challenge was unique to her and her situation. The challenges came in surprising form and fashion.

A few teammates talked about finishing first things first and how little things like buying a planner is miles beyond thinking about planning. Another teammate talked about her big priority she never gets to. This led to clarity around why so many couples divorce. Turns out real freedom requires that we wall ourselves off from options. Now that is some kinda funny, don’t you think?

Today a team got a little weird, together. Church of Cam brought revelation. OG came ready to challenge. Reika questioned her deepest held beliefs. TZ learned some optimism. LKZ introduced herself to “done so.” Frankee took us back to practice 24 and set the tone for 30 by so doing. Jeremy reminded us inspiration, oftentimes, comes in small packages. And, kman, the leader of this clan, was absent. We missed him. We didn’t miss a beat.

Remember, the highest performing teams are weird. The diversity of their thinking is the root of their weirdness. As your team grows in size and scope, you will have to fight to keep it weird. Systems, you see, naturally move toward conformity and confluence of thought. Organizations, in order to survive, bring structure and order to the chaos that comes with any clan.

Too much structure kills creativity. Too much chaos leads to inconsistency. Just this side of chaos is the one you want. Everybody wants to find the magic elixcir that leads them right up to the hairy edge. Today, we tasted it. Actually, today, we experienced it. “It” is called deep practice. Turns out peak performances are a paradox. We peak when we marry confluence of thought and creative thinking. Sorry, there are no simple solutions to swallow.

Embrace paradox. Practice. Invite challenge. Trust the process. Creative performances will come; oftentimes when you least expect “it…”
