Here is an unintended consequence of doing some serious jail time. It’s not what you think. The vast majority, and I mean the vast majority, of inmates gain something when they lose their freedom. Most gain weight.
Prisoners wear comfortable, loose material around their waist. They have no choice in the matter. No jeans results in inmates gains. You see, your jeans don’t lie. They tell you when you’ve gained a pound or two and do so more smugly than a scale. Monitoring matters.
And, this is why your OPUS ends with the “S,” your scorecard for significance. Your scorecard is your monitoring tool for living out your big dream in work and in life. Most human systems develop scorecards for success. We tend to get really good at tracking top line revenue and bottom line results. Nothing wrong with that; it’s just not enough. After awhile, you see, chasing a number loses its luster. Either we lose interest in chasing something we’ve hit so many times before, or we grow tired of missing some kinda number that feels like it’s out of our control. This is why we encourage our family, friends, and clients to develop their scorecard for significance. Tracking numbers or nuances of your own choosing. Tracking the kinda metrics that matter to you. Monitoring matters. Monitoring meaning matters even more.
What kinda metrics you chasing? Are they significant to you? Or, are you chasing only dollars and hoping, someday, it’ll just all make some sense?
Tell me more, my friend. Tell me more…
