Yesterday, during practice 49, we not only watched U2 risk it all back in 1990, we had the great privilege to see someone risk it all right in front of us.
We read about the difference between motivation and inspiration. And, an example of inspiration was front and center for all to see. I was inspired. Really inspired.
We read Quinn’s quote on the hero’s journey, listened to Bowie’s song titled, Heroes, and watched a real hero tell us how she and her kids are learning to “delay gratification” at the grocery so, someday, they’ll have a house to call their own.
Yesterday, we read about Gallup’s engagement numbers again. According to them, 28% of employees are engaged, 55% are disengaged, and 17% are actively disengaged. And, Jeff asked what about employees that are beyond engaged. The answer, of course, is damn few. Damn few is all you need to enable and sustain a high performance team. This is why we practice and why we do not STOP.
Yesterday was another tough practice. Lots of challenges were laid down. A few probably felt like they were laid out. A number of folks looked in the mirror instead of looking out the window. Yesterday we went deeper. Yesterday was productive.
And, yesterday we saw weak cores (vast majority), strong will (Grantland), and we witnessed one person, put under extreme pressure performing in relative calm. His strong core was on display for all to see. It looked great and lot’s of us wished “we could be so lucky.” The truth is, however, it’s all about choices. Calm is more about decisions than default demeanor, just like strong cores aren’t inherited as much as they are intensely, and painfully built.
Yesterday, I was reminded of why I’ve chosen to practice, deeply, intently and focused on the few. Thanks team for another great practice. And, thanks Phil, for a pleasant surprise. Practice 50. I can hardly wait…
