Repent, recant, rationalize…

All BTL clients are challenged to author their worldview-their deepest held beliefs. Yesterday, during practice 57, little Miss Sunshine asked a question that comes up frequently from those that have authored such a thought provoking work. She asked if you should write what you aspire toward or what you are. The answer is yes. The same is true when authoring your identity statements and your principles.

Here’s the real question. What do you do when your behavior is out of alignment with your belief? How do you reconcile with you? You have a couple choices if you still have a conscious. You can change your behavior to match your belief. Repent, if you will. Repeat offences wear down your will so it pays to get to the root of said behavior. Your other choice is much easier. You can change your belief to match your behavior. Recant, if you will.

And now for the most popular choice when behavior is out of alignment with belief. You can simply rationalize your way to believing that your behavior is justified in this unusual set of circumstances. You kinda convince yourself that who you are is aspirational enough from where you’ve been and what you’ve endured. And, since there are no moral absolutes, you alone are your judge and jury. Life is better, you say to yourself, lived without regret. So, you simply move on…

My worldview, identity, and principles (WIP) represent who I am and who I aspire to be. I am full of integrity gaps. I am a W.I.P. (work in process) too. And, I believe repenting and coming clean allows God to make the most of this mess called me.

Leaders are believers. What do you believe? Tell me more, my friend. Tell me more…
