Sacred to self evident…

One of our national treasures has to be The Declaration of Independence, authored by Thomas Jefferson. He penned this beauty not because he wanted to. He penned it because he was John Adams “penman.” Adams could speak. Jefferson, not so much. Jefferson wrote the declaration away in seclusion and, we can imagine, wishing he had been given the gift of gab. Adams stirring oratory skills carried the day. Jefferson labored away quietly.

He showed the draft to Franklin and Adams somewhere in the third week of June, 1776. They made one change before taking the declaration to congress on June 28, 1776. One, big change. Do not miss this. This could be huge.

“We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable,” got eliminated. Instead, Adams and Franklin inserted that these truths are “self evident.”

Extrapolate this change to you, your team, your choices, and your commitments. What truths do you hold sacred and undeniable? What do you do when what is evident to you is injurious to another? Why is sacred so scary when histories evidence proves humans in power “self serve” by default? Why? Why? Why?

  1. Not a very “pc” post again Toto… out of your basket again I see?

In our culture to say there is anything sacred and undeniable is offensive because it presumes a truth that is absolute. From a “true” higher power.

When there are 2 self’s needed in order to agree on what is “self-evident,” crazy Anaias Nen insight’s ( “we don’t see things the way they are, we see things the way WE are”) is lived out to its fullest — usually with 3D glasses ready to defend/deny/destroy and preserve our “out” in relationships because we are under no authority other than what we deem to be evident TO self i.e. FOR self. The only “undeniable” thing that gets protected is the “sacred” cows to whoever deems them as such.

God help us — and I don’t mean those who just “help themselves.” Help the FEW who have enough courage and humility to grow from being self-centered/others-conrolling to becoming core-centered/self-controlling. Help us attack our own blind spots, our own Curses of Knowledge of what we think is self-evident, to care about what is self-evident or obvious to someone else.

And help us most of all to come clean in our hearts about what we know is sacred and undeniable — and submit to YOUR truth.
