Alexander and his team…

I love studying history and finding why certain people, tribes, communities, teams, and companies achieved what few others even attempt. One such nutcase is Alexander the Great. Alexander is the only human credited with conquering the world so I guess he fits the bill.

Here’s something you may not know about him. He led from the front. I mean the point of the spear kinda front. He rode his warhorse, Bucephalus, from the very front, not from the comfort of the middle, not from the rear, and most certainly not from HQ. He didn’t deliver inspiring speech and then watch from the mountaintop. “Follow me” works.

And, before one of Macedonia’s climactic battles with Ancient Persia, Alexander gathered his team together and gave away his possessions. He gave to his generals great estates and to his privates cattle and homes of their own. He gave away everything to the point that his own men begged him to STOP. When asked what would he keep for himself his answer was classic ccd (clear, concise, and direct). “My hopes.”

Want a better team?

Become a better leader. Be first on the field and last off. Take nothing from your men/women. Listen to them and learn from them. And, give them something that money cannot buy and no enemy can take. Give them your greatest possession – give them hope.

What’s your team catching from you?
