Freedom is NOT free. I’ve written about this as have countless others and we almost all agree that real freedom is bookended with real responsibility. Funny that the more a society overvalues personal freedom the more citizens take up residence in victimhood instead of simply bucking up.
Take the topic of student loans. America’s Universities have historically had a little problem collecting on their students debts. For hundreds of years it’s been a problem. No bigee, however.
Insert Obama’s desire to give more freedom to the less fortunate and make college more affordable. Suddenly the 7000 plus American Universities have a BIG problem. The government has removed some of the freedom from the university to determine who is worthy of a loan. The uncollectible debt for one such University I had the chance to visit has gone up ten fold since our President decided to act freely with other peoples money. Collecting these kinda student loans is now the problem. The problem…
Freedom and responsibility are bookends. We cannot sustain freedom without holding people responsible. This is the historical reality of any tribe, neighborhood, city, state, or country. The same is true for your company.
Your job as the leader is to make sure your team marries freedom with responsibility. Your job is tough. America needs some tough love from a few leaders with some nerve. God help us if we get another one who has forgotten how we got here…

Your post comes as my oldest son has entered college and debt. It doesn’t feel good, at all. A responsible person (unlike me) would have saved the money, up front. If that didn’t happen, that person would need to prepare themselves for the inevitable, on the backend. We have the means to do that. It’s simple math. Does everyone else have the means? Do they feel that same level of responsibility?
