“Both—the ability to start, and that to continue, ignoring self-doubt and persisting until completion….. It often takes more than you thought. More energy, more homework, more discipline, more focus and more time.” This was one of the nuggets offered by Valeria Maltoni, in a recent blog (one of my favorites) as she discussed the idea of “Deep Work/Gaining Mastery”.
Steven Pressfield the acclaimed author, (Gates of Fire & Tides of War) say’s writing is about mastery and dedication to doing the deep work, setting a side pockets of uninterrupted time to hone your craft, go deeper, stay focussed and keep practicing.
Mason Currey ran a blog for 6 years called “Daily Routines” that scoured interviews & biographical material to identify the work habits of famous creatives (writers, artists, musicians and other interesting people) and how they organized their days. After writing, practicing and honing his craft he has now recently published a new book, titled, “Daily Rituals”, summarizing the habits of 161 notable artists. The average number of “Deep Work” hours of famous creatives turned out to be 5.25 hours per day. The reason most aspiring creatives fail is because 5 hours of daily “Deep Work” is absurdly difficult!
I like the way Chet put it in a recent blog, ” The best of the best understand the gig. The journey will have to be taken alone. Others can help. Others will help. Others will make a real difference. However, others cannot guide you to your promised land of Mastery.”
What’s holding you back from reaching your creative potential…….Your Big Dreams……..Your Strong CORE?

Good stuff Pete. Keep writing and keep working…
