The brain is an amazing organ. We know a ton about our brains and are learning a ton more each year. However, most neuroscientists estimate that we understand about ten percent of what this amazing processor is up to. Amazing. Here’s a simple brain fact. The brain does three things really well – perceives reality, processes alternatives, and makes decisions.
The brain perceives reality. Of course, this baby mostly sees what it’s always seen. That’s not a problem…most of the time. When was the last time you checked out your own “mental models?”
The brain also processes alternatives. Of course, this bad boy mostly thinks in “either or” decision trees. Talk about taking some serious shortcuts. Well, don’t we all? When was the last time you asked one of your truth tellers to help you see your prejudices?
The brain, finally, makes a decision. Of course, since we are “rational” beings, this beauty is oh so predictable. Again, this is all true…most of the time. Does your team see your decision history as being “predictable” or “problematic” or both? Do you know why? When is the brain suspect? When does the “rational” processor turn less predictable. Hmm, I’m glad you asked.
Here’s the answer. More often than you THINK. Think back to 9/11. How long do you think survivors waited, on average, before heading downstairs? How long would you have waited to act? I imagine reaction time for me would have been swift and decisive. I’m imagining the same was true for the survivors.
The answer is coming. Think about your answer before reading on. Slow down. Reflect. Write your answer down.
The answer is not six seconds, sixteen seconds, twenty six seconds, thirty six seconds, or even 46 seconds. The answer is not one hundred twenty six seconds, two hundred twenty six seconds or even three hundred twenty six seconds.
The answer is three hundred sixty seconds. Survivors waited for six long minutes before moving. You, most likely, are waiting too long to make a decision today. You are waiting too long. Your brain is wired this way. Go on. Decide. Move. Act.
Your survival just might depend on it…
